Takada x Halle ship?
Tumblr media
Very sexy, 10/10.... when Kiyomi demands that Halle protect her as she invites Misa over for a catfight... when Halle is secretly double-agenting, but MAYHAPS could become conflicted about her loyalty to the Wammy's boys if she ever developed feelings for Kiyomi instead... the possibilities boggle the mind

everything i loved about "the little mermaid" live action
Ariel's melody being her siren song!! that little new bit of lore!! i also really liked that it added more depth as to why Ursula wanted her voice in exchange for her becoming human
the way Ariel became almost angry during the bridge of "Part of Your World", she was so frustrated that she couldn't do the things she was dreaming about, like YES let her be mad!!
full body chills during "Part of Your World" + the first reprise
Ariel helping Max onto the boat 😭😭😭
I've mentioned this before, but Ariel hearing Eric's voice before seeing him!!! hearing him sing before seeing him!!! agh!!!!
Eric holding Ariel's hand on the shore after she rescues him 😭
the detail put into each of Ariel's sisters was so stunning, i'm so excited to read more about them in the books! i loved that they each had their own specific vibe
THEY INCLUDED THE FACT THAT URSULA AND TRITON ARE SIBLINGS YES THANK YOU VERY MUCH
"For the First Time" being a voice over, as Ariel's thoughts, and then the scene shifting to complete darkness except for her to represent us being in her head and hearing her thoughts, and the way it gets cut off when she realizes she can't say "hello" to Eric? i cried
The Jodi Benson cameo and her giving Halle!Ariel the fork 😭 literally her passing on the mantel of Ariel 😭😭
Eric and Ariel being total nerds with each other??
The way Ariel "told" Eric her name using the constellations???? and him saying it was written in the stars???? hello????
Also Eric saying "my little mermaid" made me so soft wtf
Eric and Ariel running around and giggling in the castle and being the definition of puppy love like they're so goofy and in love i adore them
the "Part of Your World" reprise after Ariel sees Eric with Vanessa shattered my heart, the MOST heartbreaking song
Grimsby kicking the ring away after it falls near him, my man knew exactly what was going on, he's known Ariel for three days and is already a ride or die
just Ariel and Eric holding each other so tightly after she gets her voice back, and Eric refusing to let her go until Ursula literally has to throw him away
ARIEL BEING THE ONE TO KILL URSULA USING THE SKILLS SHE SAW ERIC USE OH MY GOD IT WORKED SO SO WELL
i like that they added a chunk of time passing between Ursula's death and Eric and Ariel reuniting, it added a little extra drama and emotion when they finally saw each other again!
listen i'm an absolute sucker for a "hug before kiss" reunion and i was SO happy that Eric and Ariel had that, it fit them and their relationship perfectly, the way Eric just clung to her, and Ariel's happy smile as she hugged him back 😭
The mermaid statue and the dress representing the land vs. the sea???? and both returning back to where they're supposed to be but having new meanings????
Ariel's wedding dress being pink to (probably) pay homage to her pink ballgown in the animated movie was such a good touch, and i loved the length!!
Triton and Ariel's goodbye, where he says "you shouldn't have had to give up your voice for me to hear you"???? hello my father issues jumped tf out and had me sobbing in the theater
literally the entire movie was so beautiful, i could talk about it for hours, this is the best live action remake honestly, and Eric and Ariel (specifically the live action version obvi) have moved up to become my favorite Disney Princess/Prince pairing, just behind Belle and Adam (bc let's be honest, nothing can top them)
@queen-with-the-quill bc i know you're seeing it soon! more things i forgot to tell you lol

MY VERY SPOILERY THOUGHTS ON THE LITTLE MERMAID
I’m going absolutely feral after seeing The Little Mermaid. My inner child has been FED, and I HAVE NO ONE TO TALK TO ABOUT IT YET so here I am to spew my thoughts. Spoilers below:
1. Halle was perfect. I will accept no criticism on this point. The only thing I cared about when this live-action movie was announced was that our new Ariel would have a voice to match Jodi Benson’s, and Halle did more than deliver. She epitomized the spirit of Ariel in every way. She was playful, she was inquisitive, she was joyful and bright and fun, she was so good at tugging the heartstrings (even without dialogue!!!) and appealing to our innate wanderlust and desire to discover and experience,  and she was so so EARNEST in her portrayal I can’t even.
2. THE DEPTH THEY ADDED TO PRINCE ERIC’S CHARACTER OKAY!?!?! LIKE?!?!?! Okay, I will NOT GET OVER THIS. It was SO CLEVER of them to mirror Ariel’s journey with his desire to break free of his position’s restrictions. It worked incredibly well and did not once detract from our heroine’s spotlight. Rather, it ENHANCED their connection and sold me on their three-day love story in a deeper and more meaningful way than the original did (more on that below). ALSO ALSO ALSO SO COOL of them not to kill off his ADOPTIVE mother. ADOPTIVE. Marvelous choice! Truly. His mother’s fear of the sea gods offered a parallel to Triton’s fear of the surface world, and *CHEFS KISS*
3. Melissa McCarthy’s Pour Unfortunate Souls was a FUN TIME.
4. Awkwafina as Scuttle? Inspired.
5. MAX WAS ADORABLE AND THE STAR OF THE SHOW EVERY TIME HE WAS ON SCREEN. BEST BOY.
6. Wherever they filmed? The castle? Fucking gorgeous.
7. JODI BENSON CAMEOOOOOOO
8. Grimsby is the GOAT. Enough said.
9. NEW SONGS
I may get some hate for this, but I’m not the biggest fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda.  Idk how to put this. He has an insane amount of talent, but for...untraditional musicals. I wouldn’t say he’d be my first choice to write new songs that fit the more traditional Broadway-like musical vibes that characterized so much of the Disney Renaissance.
That being said, The Scuttlebutt was the strongest of the bunch, I think. It was very much a Miranda song, and in most instances, I’d be a little irritated by how they included a song that has a style so different from the rest of the lyrical music we know and love from the original animated movie. But it worked here, likely because it was delivered by Awkwafina’s Scuttle and FIT the character.
Honorable mention to Wild Uncharted Waters, only because WOW Jonah Hauer-King went OFF on that performance. This boy said “I get one musical number and I’m going to KILL IT” and he did.
Also very much liked the Part of Your World (Reprise II)! It tied everything together really nicely.
10. THE OTHER NOTABLE CHANGES I NEED TO SCREAM ABOUT
I LOVE THAT ARIEL HESITATED BEFORE CHOOSING TO GO THROUGH WITH THE SPELL.
I LOVE THAT ARIEL WAS FORCED TO FORGET SHE NEEDED A KISS FROM ERIC. --> THIS. THIS IS FREAKING AMAZING. I can’t even express how much more I felt for Ariel and Eric’s love story. How much more real it felt. How much more believable and true. I don’t buy in to one-day (or few-day) love stories very easily, especially when physical intimacy/attraction is a driving force. My little aroace ass dug the fact that kissing Eric literally was the last thing on Ariel’s mind. She got to be herself, explore this new world, AND do it with someone who appreciated her curiosity and found joy in how much joy she was experiencing, who could have just as much fun as she could. God. Goals.
I LOVE THAT ERIC KNEW SOMETHING WASN’T RIGHT WITH VANESSA, EVEN IF HE COULDN’T PUT HIS FINGER ON IT. Very reminiscent of Prince of Song and Sea by Linsey Miller (a YA AU retelling told from Prince Eric’s POV. It’s a fun, easy read, if you’re curious).
I LOVE THAT ARIEL ACTIVELY TACKLED VANESSA AND BROKE THE SHELL NECKLACE HERSELF.
I LOVE THAT ARIEL WAS THE ONE TO STAB URSULA. I LOVE THAT SO MUCH. WE LOVE A BADASS HEROINE WHO DON’T NEED NO MAN TO SAVE HER.
All of these changes were important and mean a lot to me. I think it challenges a lot of the issues people have with the original animated movie, in that, here in the 2023 version, no one can argue that Ariel made her choices because she was lusting after a man. Or that she’s a damsel in distress. Very good stuff there.
11. My critiques
Some of the cinematography was weird. The transition between acting scenes and singing scenes didn’t always flow right. They felt abrupt and awkward. I definitely worried a bit about the CGI too, and it wasn’t too terrible imo.
And my biggest complaint: idk what it was about the ending, but it didn’t *quite* hit right. In the original animated movie, one of the last bits of dialogue comes from Triton, when he says, “...how much I’m going to miss her.” The finale of the animated movie is then a spectacle of swelling music and a heartfelt case of “show” rather than “tell.” The hug between Ariel and Triton on the wedding barge is perfect. The way in which the mer-people come to witness the wedding and send off Eric and Ariel is perfect.
The live-action ending felt...a little too somber. It became too much about Triton letting go and not enough about Ariel and Eric setting off on adventure together or about their worlds colliding in peace. I wouldn’t say that the last conversation between Triton and Ariel in the 2023 movie cheapens the line “...how much I’m going to miss her” and the bittersweetness with which he gifts her back her human legs, but it came close. I would have MUCH rather had a little more from Eric and Ariel than from Triton. LIKE HELLO??? WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT RING GRIMSBY KICKED AWAY!??? THERE WAS SOMETHING THEY COULD HAVE USED RIGHT THERE. Or better yet: if they wanted to do something super touching, they could have had Eric’s mother and Triton do a short aside by themselves, or perhaps even have a sort of moment where they acknowledge each other with respect/compassion/understanding before we all refocused on Ariel and Eric for the grand finale. But nah, they did what they did, and I’ll be a bit salty about it forever.
But anyway. Overall, I was very pleased. My disappointment with the lack of emotional impact from the ending does not supersede my enjoyment of everything else.
If you made it this far, please share your thoughts! I’m eager to talk to people, because all my friends aren’t like me and didn’t go see it opening night, lol.

The Little Mermaid: My Personal Review 🧜🏾‍♀️
I grew up with Disney. I grew up with Disney Princesses, adventure, romance, music, and true love conquering all in the end. Cinderella, Snow White, Ariel, Aurora, Belle, Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas, and more to come right after as the years go by, as I grow up and become attached the creativity and wonder in films and TV shows that made Disney the way it is now.
I’ve seen the live action films. Not all of them, however. Just Aurora, Cinderella, Jasmine, Belle and now Ariel.
When I was a little girl I love Disney films, and my favorite was Beauty and the Beast. With its music, the animation, the storyline and its message on loving someone from the inside than out, it was my favorite – and I was so excited when a live action was to be form. Even better for my Harry Potter fan self when finding out the iconic Emma Watson, best known as Ms. Hermione Granger, was going to be my bookworm princess. And it fits her perfectly!
I loved it. I loved the live action films Disney made so far…
But none of them…
None of them made me cry – twice – than The Little Mermaid.
I loved The Little Mermaid. I love Jodi Benson for voicing the iconic red-headed princess of Atlantica. When I heard of the live action – when I found out who was portraying the princess, Ms. Halle Bailey, I was ready. Flashback to my childhood; I loved Brandy when playing Cinderella. The first Black Disney princess on the screen, and the film tops at number one for the creativity, the colors, the music, the diversity, the acting and just — everything was exactly how I dreamed of a world. No limits, no requirements, no rules. Just creativity at its finest.
The Little Mermaid just topped over them as number 1.
Like I mentioned before, I cried – twice! I won’t spoil anything, just say that it was everything you can do to bring the story back on a live screen and even bring out more creativity – more representation – more art than ever before in animation. I’m a creative artist; this was a dream to have more than once!
There were two sides of me out when watching this film. One side was the creative side. I was taken in on the cultures that were brought out, not clashing but combining with normality and equality among each other. The colors that brought the unique qualities of each person, from major to minor characters. The acting of characters portraying the characters I knew and new characters that extended the story to new heights. The music – Oh my gosh, the music! It was both a throwback and a new era of songs that I knew I was going to love the moment I heard the lyrics, the instrumental, and the vibes in full connection to the plot line. The plot was just exact, but with the new additions to have reality out more – making you believe mermaids do exist! It was just perfect.
And then, there was the other side. The one that was a child, watching a girl with the same skin tone as me playing one of my favorite princesses. Hearing her voice, seeing her adventure, watching her personality, admiring everything about her was just… I can feel myself wanting to cry. This wasn’t just about representation for me. I’m Black, and it was nice to see but when I watched the film, I didn’t focus on her skin, just how I did when I was younger. I never focused on skin, or cultural backgrounds, or how different we look. I only saw people. I saw a girl who got the chance to play a mermaid. I saw a girl who did all she did to make this mermaid iconic again. I saw a girl who I love and admire, thanking her from the inside on making my childhood shine again.
I am literally tearing up when I saw this was the best thing I ever saw from Disney. Inside Out made me cry a tear. Endgame made me sob like a baby. But the Little Mermaid… this is my childhood! Back on the screen! And it was so much better than anything I have imagine!
This is just me pouring my feelings out. I’m not expecting anyone to read this, or any celebrity to somehow know about it. I just… For anyone who wants to see the film but isn’t sure based on how negative others must feel, considering some films didn’t fulfill their expectations—
Watch it.
I saw today as a late Mother Day’s gift with my mom.
She loved it. I loved it.
Mark my word as a writer and a fantasy lover. This is worth watching.
Thank you to the following: Director Rob Marshall; screenplay writer David Magee; actors Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Trembley, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy – my dearest and hilarious Ursula 🐙
Thank you for bringing these characters to life, bringing this story to life. As well to the other cast members I didn’t mention but are just as responsible and important for making this gift happen…
And a special thank you to my Ariels: Jodi Benson, the Ariel of my past; and Halle Bailey, the Ariel of my present. Thank you to these wonderful woman for making Ariel. I know if someday I would meet either one or both, I know I will just break down — my inner child in my heart wanting to thank these girls and how much it truly means to me.
And to one writer to another: Mr. Hans Christian Andersen. If it weren’t for you, none of this would have happened. Thank you for your gift in storytelling 🙏🏾❤️
Truly an unforgettable masterpiece 😭🧜🏾‍♀️🐙👏🏾

Disney’s The Little Mermaid (2023)
Tumblr media
All right, I’ve seen it, so let’s do this.
PROS:
- I have some problems with Ariel in this movie, but Halle Bailey ain’t one of ‘em. I mean, good lord. Not only is her singing as beautiful as expected, but her vocal impression of Jodi Benson from the original movie is phenomenal. If you hadn’t seen either movie and just heard audio files of the two back to back, it would be exceedingly difficult to pick out which was which, that’s how spot-on Bailey is with her performance. And even when Ariel is mute, Bailey never fails with her facial expressions, which continue to convey her lovable personality. You totally believe her to be Ariel because she totally believes herself to be Ariel; the sincerity that she exudes is proof of just how committed to doing this iconic character justice she was.
- Luca Paguro himself, Jacob Tremblay, was perfect castling for the voice of Flounder.
- While I hate everything else about him, I love King Triton’s design and general vibe. He’s less of a traditional king and more of a Poseidon-like god, and that’s a cool take on him.
- The shark attack sequence. I especially liked the new way that Ariel outsmarts the shark.
- "Part of Your World", both how the scene is staged and, of course, Halle Bailey’s singing.
- "For the First Time". Again, it’s a Halle Bailey song. You can’t go wrong there.
- Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, Eric’s adoptive mother. As pointless as this character was from a story standpoint, I thought that Dumezweni sold it with her performance.
- Art Malik as Grimsby. I totally bought his fatherly concern and affection for Eric.
- Once they’re finally allowed to start bonding after needlessly putting it off to pad out the runtime some more, Ariel and Eric’s chemistry is on point, especially in the dancing scene.
- Jodi Benson’s cameo as a merchant who gives Ariel a fork. Unexpected and delightful.
- From the second half of “Poor Unfortunate Souls” and all through the second half of the movie, Melissa McCarthy is suddenly good as Ursula. She’s no Pat Carroll, of course, but she finally has the bombast and intimidation factor down which she was lacking in before.
- Jessica Alexander as Vanessa, who owned those two-or-so minutes she was on screen.
- Before the way it ended I was enjoying the climax. King Triton being straight-up killed rather than turned into a polyp was a genuine shock, and gigantic Ursula was utterly terrifying.
CONS:
- The opening scene is awful. Rather than that epic shot of Eric’s ship coming out of the fog with the music blaring, we get what looks to be a mermaid (actually a dolphin) swimming underwater as whimsical music plays, only for it to get cut off like a joke as the sailors on Eric’s ship try to harpoon the “mermaid” while yelling hateful superstition. Just a terrible start.
- Rather than Triton’s hatred of humans being pure bigotry on his part, the movie decides to "both sides" the conflict, making humans equally as hateful and fearful of merpeople as merpeople are of them. Worse still, they each have valid reasons for this hate and fear, making the end resolution of it being brushed off as a big misunderstanding ring hollow.
- Jonah Hauer-King as Eric. I’m sorry, I just couldn’t take him seriously in the role.
- Worse still, Eric's whole character is fucked up on multiple fronts. First off, he’s now adopted royalty instead of genuine royalty, which gives off the unfortunate implication that this is the real reason he bonds so well with the common folk and desires a life of adventure. Secondly, his life situation is made the same as Ariel’s instead of different, pushing them as kindred spirits too literally and losing much of what made him desirable to Ariel in the original. And finally, his romance with Ariel starts and ends on a lackluster note, with him being too quick to dismiss having anything to do with her after he learns she’s mute and then too quick to accept being together with her was a fantasy never meant to happen after he learns she’s a mermaid. In trying to give him more depth, the filmmakers just made him more confusing.
- The undersea world lacks appeal. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it and have since the trailers came out. More proof that animation is an art form that has things live-action can never replicate, and that Disney needs to stop making these live-action remakes already.
- Javier Bardem as King Triton. He is absolutely terrible in this, giving one of the most dull and disinterested performances I’ve seen in recent memory. He sells none of his lines.
- Triton's character isn’t any better than his actor’s performance. Beyond his bigotry against humans having more justification to it, he is downright cruel and unrelatable in his treatment of Ariel. When Triton crossed the line into abusive parenting in the original by destroying Ariel’s collection, we immediately see a flicker of realization, horror and remorse on his face once he snaps out of his rage. He’s too proud to admit to anything yet, but it helps sell his “What have I done?” remorse that we see later, and his sacrifice for Ariel’s sake in the climax. But here, he seems to have no such remorse. He’s hardly a father; just a tyrant.
- Flounder looks unappealing and Jacob Tremblay’s voice can’t save that. Sebastian looks even more unappealing, and Daveed Diggs’ obnoxiously high-pitched voice only makes his character worse. Scuttle looks unappealing, and Awkwafina creates such a different character with her performance that I don’t get why they bothered even keeping the “Scuttle” name. Much like with The Lion King remake, it again shows animation’s superiority in this regard.
- Ariel's hair is boring regular red and not vivid real red. That’s a fail on such an absurdly fundamental level, as well as a disservice to Halle Bailey who could have rocked such hair.
- Ariel's character, in the script, is as sanitized as I feared. She’s more of a socially conscious fighter for equality rather than a teenager realistically out primarily for herself and her own ambitions, her sexual lust for Eric is toned down to near non-existence, she’s much less of a rebel since she only goes to the surface for the first time when going to see Eric’s ship, she’s made to have far more hesitation in her deal with Ursula to the point she almost backs out entirely until Ursula cranks up her pressure campaign, and as I will talk more about later gets some needless “girlboss” additions the same way previous Disney heroines in live-action remakes have. Thank God for Halle Bailey, who minimizes the damage as best as she can.
- In the first half of the movie all the way through to the first half of “Poor Unfortunate Souls”, Melissa McCarthy is way too understated as Ursula. She’s doing a campy Bette Midler or Eartha Kitt style of voice, but doesn’t go big enough on her lines and absolutely lacks the skin-crawling, psychotic menace that Pat Carroll so effortlessly provided the character with.
- Restoring the deleted concept of Ursula being Triton’s sister and Ariel’s aunt was pointless.
- "Under the Sea". Beyond the issues of the underwater world on display not working as well as in animation and Daveed Diggs’ ear poison of a voice and delivery not holding even a candlewick to Samuel E Wright, Ariel joins in on the song by the end! Excuse me? The whole point of the song is to convince her to give up her interest in the human world! Her singing along (without being forced to because it’s part of a stage musical rehearsal that she’s obligated to partake in, as is the case in Kingdom Hearts II) is akin to signing off on that!
- There’s a plot hole about Eric’s kingdom. Apparently it’s incredibly paranoid and isolationist, and part of why Eric wants to explore other places and make connections with them is so that the kingdom “doesn’t get left behind”. That doesn’t stop its village and marketplace from being a bustling hub of multicultural diversity! Which is it? Is the kingdom isolationist or not?
- Related to the above: Eric’s song, “Wild Uncharted Waters”. Yawn.
- Also, Ariel's sisters are all different ethnicities. I assumed this meant that King Triton slept around, which certainly wouldn’t be out of place for a Greek god like he’s styled after. But no, the sisters still speak of “Mother” as if they all have the same mother! How does that work?
- Flotsam and Jetsam don't talk. Boo! Let them talk!
- There is an absolutely pointless change where Ursula, apparently having no real confidence in herself, cheats in her deal with Ariel by slipping in an amnesia potion so that Ariel forgets she needs to kiss Eric in three days’ time to stay human forever. OK, but why does that prevent her from retaining the memory of Sebastian later straight-up telling her she needs to kiss Eric? And why is she still that heartbroken when Eric gets engaged to Vanessa, given that she no longer thinks it means she won’t get to kiss him and thus won’t remain human?
- Instead of the newly human Ariel making it to shore and getting dressed in a sail before Max sniffs her out and leads Eric to her, she gets caught in a fisher boat’s net, the fisherman gives her a cloak to wear, and he...brings her to the castle? Why? When you fish out a mute girl adrift at sea, why does your mind jump to the freaking castle and its prince as the go-to solution for getting her help? And like I said before, it actually takes away from Eric and Ariel’s bond, since him finding her and, despite his disappointment that she can’t be the girl who saved him since she’s mute, still taking care of her personally since that’s the decent thing to do was a great showing of Eric being a nice guy whom you could understand Ariel loving.
- Actually, the usage of Max is disappointing in general. Eric saves him on the burning ship so that important plot point is checked off, but him having earlier met Ariel and memorized her scent ends up having no pay-off since he isn’t the one to lead Eric to Ariel. On top of this, he doesn’t get to be the one who causes Vanessa’s shell to break and Ariel to get her voice back later, so that’s another important plot function he’s deprived of. And he’s not even a sheepdog anymore, he’s a bearded collie. What was stopping the filmmakers from using a sheepdog!?
- The stupid little jade mermaid sculpture that Eric calls “my Little Mermaid". OK, so is the movie’s title supposed to be in reference to that now? Why include that as a thing at all?
- "Kiss The Girl", beyond being ruined by Daveed Diggs’ voice, has the pointless lyrical change to make sure Eric has Ariel’s consent before kissing her. As the new lyrics say: “Use your words to ask her”. Except...Eric doesn’t fucking do that! He leans in to kiss Ariel, with her also leaning in to kiss him, at the end just like in the original, without him having asked her beforehand if it’s OK! So a classic, perfectly good love song got altered for nothing!
- "The Scuttlebutt". The only good part about it was Ariel hating it as much as I did!
- Instead of the animals all divebombing Vanessa at her and Eric’s wedding, with Max dealing the finishing blow that makes her lose the shell containing Ariel’s voice, we have Ariel being a girlboss and....engaging Vanessa in a cat fight over the shell, ending with Ariel grabbing it and breaking it herself. Because a cat fight between women is so much more progressive?
- The climax ends with Ariel and Eric swapping places, and Ariel killing Ursula with the ruined ship. This doesn’t work, since not only does Ariel not know how to steer a ship and she looks kind of ridiculous sliding around the deck on her fish tail, Ursula going after Eric specifically rather than Ariel makes no sense (Ariel just killed Flotsam and Jetsam, Ursula is pissed off at her above all else) and Eric not killing Ursula means Triton has no impetus for learning that he was wrong about humans. Maybe this wouldn’t be a problem if Triton stayed dead in this version (since, y’know, he actually died), but alas he gets resurrected once Ursula is killed and loses the trident. And sure enough, he’s learned nothing, which leads us directly into...
- The Ending. Ariel just accepts living under the sea from now on and becomes severely depressed about it, which somehow makes Triton change his mind and turn her human (she was depressed after he destroyed her grotto and he clearly didn’t give a fuck; what’s the difference now?) Eric had also accepted he and Ariel weren’t meant to be after all, but once she shows up as a human again he instantly reverse on that. Queen Selina sadly remarked that the human world and mer-world just weren’t meant to exist together...but then Ariel is made human again and gets together with Eric, and then she says the exact opposite and endorses the two worlds existing together! Everyone is just changing their mind at the drop of a hat; it’s ridiculous! And rather than ending on a wedding with a beautiful choir version of “Part of Your World” being sung, the movie abruptly ends with Eric and Ariel sailing off in a boat toward a ship that they will use to explore other kingdoms and further connect the two worlds together in the process while the generic instrumental “Part of Your World” plays. There’s just....no real heart to it. Which sums up this movie’s problem: like the vast majority of these live-action remakes, it was not made with the same heart as the animated original. The best that can be said about it is that it’s not the worst of the remakes, and that it provides a great stepping stone for Halle Bailey’s professional acting career. Beyond that, it’s useless.

Put On Your Raincoats | Unwilling Lovers (Colt, 1977)
Tumblr media
Now, this is coming from someone who’s watched a few too many movies that merit a colossal “Watch at Your Own Risk” label, so take this with a grain of salt, but what’s most surprising about this movie, which is a porno about a necrophile serial killer, is how not soul crushing the experience is. To be clear, this isn’t a pleasant movie to sit through, but I think the griminess is… maybe not alleviated, but at least complicated by the sheer weirdness. A lot of that comes down to the lead performance by Zebedy Colt, who also directed. Colt as an actor I know primarily for playing sickos and freaks, but what I think distinguishes him here from other porn actors who specialized in such roles is the seeming lack of agency. Jamie Gillis and George Payne played such roles to memorable effect as well, but you look at their characters and get the sense that they’re in control and might behave in ways you might be able to predict (not that such knowledge would offer much sense of safety). Colt plays this character as a clashing combination of tics, which creates a certain instability, as if his actions are at least in part out of his hands. (He takes a similar approach to his character in Sex Wish, but in that movie he is frighteningly forceful and takes control of the proceedings in ways that totally destabilize the movie.) Now I wouldn’t call this movie a work of psychological realism, but given that his character has the mind of a child and imitates what he sees and hears, and given that the only instances of sex he sees are marked by violence explicit or implicit, there’s a certain logic to him engaging in murder and necrophilia.
All of this sounds unsettling, and I suppose it is, but I think Colt both through his performance and through his direction injects an element of camp into the proceedings. Colt does a Jerry Lewis impression when in child mode and does a macho man parody when he’s imitating other characters. And Renee Sanz, as his domineering mother, plays her role cartoonishly, like a parody of a bad Southern Gothic novel. And while the movie doesn’t dance around its subject matter, it also doesn’t rub your face in it the way something like the similarly themed Forced Entry does. (“Not as bad as Forced Entry! Four stars!” says Variety.) I suppose some of that might be the ragged, not entirely competent filmmaking, but when you have a supposedly horrific murder scene where the actresses conveniently duck out of the frame to get stabbed and stumble back in clutching their stomachs unconvincingly, it’s hard not to chuckle at least a bit. I think Colt has demonstrated his knack for weirdness elsewhere, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, even if the heavily degraded VHS rip I watched, which makes everyone look radioactive, did his craft no favours. (Colt’s striped sweater and red shoes will sear your retinas.) This was also shot on Colt’s country property (apparently the same weekend as Terri’s Revenge!), and I think the setting goes some way to diffuse the pungency of the proceedings.
If anything, the fact that the copy made everything unappealing probably works in the movie’s favour as horror, although given the great female cast, there are, how you say, limits to how unpleasant the proceedings can be no matter how much jagged editing Colt deploys. (Saying that I found the ladies in the necrophile porno hot would be a surefire way to end up on a watchlist, so I won’t say it. In those words. And certainly not out loud. “Necrophile porno has super hot cast! Four stars!” says Variety. There, they said it, not me.) This has a few Colt regulars like Jody Maxwell, Terri Hall and Nancy Dare, all of whom I like seeing in these things. Peter Andrews in a recent Rialto Report interview recalls the pleasant atmosphere on set, and I do think you get a slight vibe that this is a group of people who enjoyed coming together to make a messed up porno movie. The movie wisely also casts C.J. Laing and Annie Sprinkle, who are great to have in your movie if you want to make weird, off putting or extreme sexual content bearable to watch. Only Annie Sprinkle could make a question about “kinky shit” sound wholesome.

I saw the new Little Mermaid
Disney really saw Mera eat a flower and said, "That scene alone is what netted Aquaman a billion at the box office, we're putting that in our movie" and you know what, they were right
anyway The Little Mermaid (1989) is my favorite animated Disney film and I'm not going to pretend this is as good as it but it's far and away the best live action remake since Disney decided that the live action remakes were going to be functionally exactly the same as the originals
(It's been years since I've seen live action Cinderella and Jungle Book, I don't remember well enough to say how those compare to this)
Halle Bailey was amazing and sometimes her voice was so close to Jodi Benson's when she spoke that it threw me for a loop
I was really surprised by Melissa McCarthy's performance, she nailed Ursula's vibe and mannerisms. I still think the part should have gone to a drag queen but she rocked it
I guess there will be spoilers below the cut but also it's The Little Mermaid and y'all already know how it goes
was anyone going to tell me that Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Men was Ariel's dad or was I just supposed to see this movie for myself
why can Scuttle breathe and speak underwater
I thought it was really cute that Jodi Benson had a cameo to give Ariel a dinglehopper
this went overlong, the original told the whole story perfectly at like an hour and twenty-two minutes and this added fifty-two minutes to that, how long do you think a child's attention span lasts
That being said while a lot of the added stuff wasn't needed, there wasn't any garbage put in that fundamentally changed what made the original story work (looking at you, Mulan remake) so that was nice
the girl who played Vanessa/Ursula in disguise looked so much like Melissa McCarthy, great job casting department
The new songs are fine, I don't see them becoming classics but they're all right and I feel bad for any song that has to go up against Howard Ashman's originals
The colors in this movie are gorgeous, I could watch Ariel's iridescent scales all day
I thought it was cute that in Eric's expanded back story, they gave him the same Special Interest in collecting that Ariel has
I have seen Eric's actor somewhere before and I have no clue where, I thought he was in Bridgerton but he wasn't and nothing on his imdb looks familiar, this will haunt me
Somehow we had to get rid of "Don't underestimate the importance of BODY LANGUAGE" because that's not a good message and we can't trust the audience to understand they're not supposed to take the villain at face value but the lyrics to Kiss the Girl remain unchanged as far as I could tell?
anyway it was fun, if you've got two hours and fifteen minutes to kill I recommend it

Coparents with Benefits; ch.1
The kids are finally going on one of those weekend-long nature field trips! And I heard Nicky's dads are chaperoning! Wait, dads? Or: Jodie and Glenn play nice for a weekend, and end up bonding. By some definition of bonding, anyway.
new fandom new me... I debated not cross-posting this one but i can't resist another chance to get notes. I'll queue the other chapters for the next few days.
Taglist: T rated; Jodie Foster x Glenn Close; enemies to enemies-with-benefits; season 1 spoilers
read on ao3 here
"Glenn!! Come on in!" Morgan pulled Glenn into the house with a kiss on the cheek, turning to lead him into the living room without missing a beat. His hand came up to touch the spot before following her into the foyer in a bit of a daze.
He’d tried not to tell her about what had happened in the forgotten realms, or the version of history he remembered, but she’d always been able to read him like a book. Apparently, she was a bit like Nick -- she had some fuzzy recollections from both timelines, though not as clear as the memories their son had regained when shit broke loose. So she’d already had an inkling that there was something weird between them, and when she saw Glenn, Nick and Jodie all dancing around something, she easily rooted her way to the truth like a hog digging up truffles.
And, it turns out, she didn’t find it as off-putting as anyone had expected. She still lived with Jodie and Nick, but she treated Glenn like-- like... he didn’t know what. More affectionate than he was prepared to handle. He was slowly getting used to it, but reuniting with the woman you mourned who is now married to someone else isn’t easy, no matter how she acts about it. He sort of got the feeling she would be fine with just having two husbands, if Glenn wasn’t so cagey.
Well, if Glenn wasn’t so cagey, and if the two husbands in question could get along for more than five minutes.
Morgan’s head popped around the corner. "You coming?"
"Uh. Yeah." He closed the door behind him before shuffling down the hall. "Where’s Nick?"
"He should be down in a second," she said with a glance at her watch. "He’s pretty punctual getting ready for school."
That must be one of the things he picked up from his newer dad. Glenn tried very hard to keep the distaste from showing on his face. He wasn’t sure if it was working or not, because true to Morgan's word, Nick came trotting down the steps moments later.
"Hi Glenn!" The bright smile on Nick’s face made all the gross feelings in Glenn’s gut evaporate, and he grinned back, wrapping his son in a hair-ruffling hug.
"Hey kiddo!" It had been a while since he could run his hands through Nick’s hair without demon horns getting in the way. At home, Nick usually defaulted to a sort of half-demonic appearance, which was cool. When he was alone, Glenn tended to let it all hang out, but to each their own.
"Daaaaaaaaaad," Nick whined, without any real irritation behind it. "I just finished doing my hair..."
Glenn snickered a bit, releasing his hold. "Eh, still looks good. Tousled." Nick rolled his eyes. "You ready for field trippin', man? My bike’s parked outside, got a helmet just for you--"
"Aaaaaactually," Morgan interrupted, one finger raised in the way she used to do when she was about to drop some news that would absolutely harsh the vibe of the day. Glenn frowned, but he couldn’t actually be upset by anything she said, these days. "You’ll probably need to take the car for this one..."
"Huh? Nick’s been on my bike before. It’s totally safe, and the way to the school is like, thirty miles an hour, tops--"
"No, no, it’s not the bike. Well it is the bike, but just-- it doesn’t have enough seats." She was so cute when she was beating around the bush... wait, no, Glenn, focus.
"Dad--er, Jodie also signed up to chaperone this trip," Nick jumped in, saving his mother from the bad-news obligation. "He said it was going to be a surprise, but I hadn’t mentioned you were already chaperoning, because whenever I mention hanging out with you, he makes this face... Kind of like that one you’re making right now, actually."
"...Right." Glenn tried not to grind his teeth together.
"So I said you guys would carpool," Morgan added cheerfully, scooping up a duffel bag from the floor and handing it to Nick.
"It would probably be better if I just call and cancel," Glenn said with a sigh, pulling his phone from the pocket of his leather jacket. "I wouldn't want to distract Jodie from his important chaperoning duties."
Plus, it was hard enough to convince people he's Nick’s uncle without Jodie there trying to create as much distance between them as possible. Nick had enough to deal with, without rumors of his weird extended family conflicts circling the PTA.
...Also, the idea of spending a long weekend with Jodie Foster made his stomach turn.
He heard Nick's genuine "nooooooo" the same time he felt Morgan's hand on his, and he looked between the two, insides feeling wibbly again. "Danielle and her mom already canceled because they got the stomach flu, plus Jake's dad had something come up for work, so if one more chaperone cancels the trip is off!"
Morgan caught his eye, and she gave him a look which managed to convey something along the lines of you have to do this for him, he's been looking forward to it so much. Glenn was just glad he'd skipped breakfast today, lest his turning guts decide to dump their contents on her shoes. "Henry will be there with his boys," she said with her mouth instead of her eyes, and Nick nodded.
Glenn put his phone away with a sigh. "He'll probably be occupied wrangling Lark and Sparrow all day. Let me get my bag off the bike, then..."
Morgan gave him a quick hug in thanks. He didn't put his arms around her, not wanting to be awkward with how reluctant he would be to let her go.
"Where's the Narc at, anyway? He'd better not make us late." The nickname earned him a small look of reproach, a bit of distance which he was thankful for.
"He's already waiting in the car." Glenn rolled his eyes hard, but Morgan had turned away to hug Nick goodbye.
So much for a fun nature trip with the boys...
---
"We’re going to be late."  Jodie’s shoulders were hunched up by his ears, his face screwed up in a mix of irritation at the red light in front of him and irritation at his unwelcome passenger.
"We are not," Glenn disagreed from the backseat, his feet kicked up on the center console. "They said we were supposed to be there at nine."
"They said they’re leaving at nine!"
"Uh, yeah? That’s what I said?"
"That’s not--" Jodie cut himself off, pinching the bridge of his nose between his fingers. From the passenger seat, Nick put a calming hand on his elbow as he took a deep breath. After a moment he continued, his voice schooled into an infuriating faux-calmness. "We should have gotten there an hour ago, so we could have parked and helped load everyone onto the bus."
Glenn debated pointing out that he would have been there a lot faster with Nick on his bike. On one hand, it was true, but on the other, it was a bit early in the morning to hear the traffic cop lecture. ‘Motorcycles have to follow the same traffic laws as cars, Glenn.’ ‘Just because you can fit between cars doesn’t mean you can weave through traffic, Glenn.’  ‘Red lights mean stop, not punch it, Glenn.’  Eugh. Just the thought of it threatened to give him a headache.
He studied the back of Jodie’s head, instead. He wasn’t really sure what Morgan saw in him... Close-cropped, almost military style haircut, boring gray polo shirt tucked into khakis over steel-toed cop boots. Almost the inverse of Glenn in every way -- Glenn’s shoulder-length hair held back with a torn bandanna, face overdue for a shave, worn leather jacket and ripped-up jeans almost made them look like they were made to oppose each other. He supposed there was still some level of bad boy underneath all the beige of his cop uniform, but Glenn only got to see the demon side of him when shit went seriously wrong, or he managed to piss him off really badly.
Which was fun, but it tended to upset Morgan and Nick when they went at it in full demon form outside the Infernal Plane, so Glenn did try to keep that to a minimum. Usually.
How did he express that naughty side before he could turn into a demon? Probably by yelling at people he pulled over, waving his taser around. Or his gun? Do traffic cops get guns?
"We're here," Jodie pointed out in the most deadpan monotone imaginable. "Get out of my car."
Glenn took his time doing so, only a little on purpose. He closed the door in time to see Nick catch up with his friends -- Grant and Terry Jr. were there, along with a few other kids in their class whose names Glenn hadn't bothered to memorize.
Lark and Sparrow were also nearby, listening to their father speak with one-half boredom and one-half misguided respect. Henry put a hand on each of their heads to say something-- judging by Sparrow's smile and Lark's eye-roll, something affectionate-- before sending the boys off to join their friends. When he caught Glenn's eye he grinned, waving an arm in greeting with enough enthusiasm to involve his whole body in the gesture. Henry always seemed surprised to see him as a living human; he supposed it was a combination of him usually meeting the guys in demon-form and Henry literally seeing him die once before. Luckily, a long weekend was a short enough time for the demon glamor to hold up, so he’d be in human form with two unscarred eyes for the duration of the trip. As for the other half -- well, death is only permanent if you're a loser. Glenn gave him a nod in return.
The slam of Jodie's hatchback trunk made him jump. "Well? Care to join us, Mr. Close?"
"Ladies first." Glenn waved his hand for Jodie to go first, earning himself an eyeroll. As they approached the bus, the teachers started loading the kids on, paired up in twos or threes. Nick, Grant and Terry ran up the steps about halfway through the line -- the other boys must have saved a spot for Nick. That was nice of them, but it left Glenn and Jodie bringing up the rear together.
So much for hanging with his boy all weekend. With Jodie around, Glenn couldn’t even sit with one of the single moms on the bus ride...
"Mr. Close, Mr. Foster," the teacher gave them a nod as she checked their names off the list. "Cutting it a bit close on time, aren’t we?"
Jodie glared daggers through the side of Glenn’s head, but he didn’t dignify it. "Fashionably late," Glenn responded, shooting her a pair of finger guns. She didn’t seem amused. "We made it in time, no worries! Would’ve been here faster if we didn’t have such a slow driver," he added, throwing an arm around Jodie’s shoulders.
Jodie stiffened. His teeth were grinding together audibly. "We would’ve been here faster if we could have left when I planned--"
Glenn slapped him on the back a little rougher than necessary, passing in front of him to get onto the bus.
---
The destination: Catalina Island. It seemed like a fancy-schmancy kind of place for a school field trip, but apparently they were trying to teach the kids about nature and the ecosystem and stuff like that.
Since it was an island, though, after the two-hour bus ride, they had to load all the kids off the bus and onto a ferry for a two-hour boat ride. They were all beyond antsy, and it took them about a half an hour to get all the kids through the requisite bathroom breaks and on their way. Lark and Sparrow just about launched themselves out of the bus as soon as it stopped. Glenn felt similar, after two hours of tense silence next to Officer Narc.
"Don’t forget to wash your hands!" Henry called after them, watching his boys race into the bathroom. He sighed, shoulders rising and falling with familiar fatigue.
"Man, those two never stop going, huh?"
Henry startled a little, but brightened when he saw it was Glenn. "Hey Glenn! Yeah, they, uh, they’re very... passionate."
"Passionate, yeah." Glenn scratched inside his ear with his pinky finger, which was easier when he had claws. He scanned the group for Nick, but none of the kids he bothered to remember were around. Must be in the bathroom. Jodie was there, though, interrogating one of the other adults with his stupid chest puffed out.
"So. You and Jodie, huh?"
"Me and Jodie? What, me and Jodie." Did he sound defensive?
"Nothing, nothing." Henry’s hands were up, placating. "I just didn’t expect to see you both here, is all. Usually when they say Nick’s guardian is a chaperone, it’s one or the other."
Chaperone. Glenn hated that word. "Believe me, man, I didn’t either."
"What did you tell the teachers about your, uh. Unique situation?"
"Not a damn thing." He shoved his hands in his pockets, wishing he was better at changing the subject. "As far as they know, Jodie and I are brothers. Anything else is none of their damn business."
"Right. Sorry." At least Henry had the decency to feel awkward about it. "Nick looks like he’s doing good with everything, though."
Glenn relaxed a bit, letting out a breath he hadn’t known he had taken. "Yeah, he’s a strong kid. He’s not so different from how he was before..."
"Yeah, yeah." Henry nodded. "I see a lot of you in him, you know."
"Really?" These days, he wasn’t too sure about that. He tried to size up if Henry was lying or not, but insight wasn’t always his strongest skill.
"Yeah, dude, totally!" Henry’s voice cracked a little, which made it sound a little less true, but Glenn opted to believe him anyway.
"Thanks, man. That means a lot."
---
Glenn didn’t get to talk to Henry any more once the ferry started its journey; the weedy little man turned green almost immediately upon setting foot on the rocking deck of the boat. He threw up once over the side before the staff ushered him into a little bathroom near the center of the boat, where the rocking was minimal and he could sit by the head in peace.
Since it was a Friday during school hours, there weren’t too many other people on the boat. A few of the kids stayed inside on the lower level, sitting by the little tables chatting about whatever teenagers chat about, but most of them sat up top to watch the waves.
Glenn was planning on finding a spot near the back to kick his feet up and enjoy the salty air, but in the spot he would have picked, Nick was already sitting. The other kids didn’t seem to be around.
"Hey, Kiddo." Nick looked up as he approached, smiling. "Where’s the crew?"
Nick shrugged. "Lark and Sparrow had some kind of plan they wanted help with, while their dad’s not around. I figured I would leave them to it."
"Probably smart. Mind if I...?"
"Go for it." Nick made a little gesture for Glenn to sit, so he flopped into the seat next to his son.
"Sorry if I made you late for your trip." He still didn’t think he made them late, but if he’d known Nick had wanted to be there early, he would’ve tried to get there with a bit more haste.
Nick waved a hand. "No worries. I didn’t think we were that late. He’s just a little..."
"Yeah. A little." Glenn kicked his feet forward, crossing his ankles over one another. "Are things good at home, with him and your mom?"
"Huh? Yeah, it’s-- it’s fine, it’s good." Nick looked away, though Glenn couldn’t tell if it was to hide his face or to look out over the water. He directed his gaze over the water too. "It’s not too different to how it was before. Or, you know, in... one version of before."
"Right." He wondered if this was a smoking or non-smoking area. It was open air... "You been practicing your guitar lately?"
"Yeah!" Nick perked up a bit, glad to not be talking about home life any more. "I’ve been trying to convince Grant to learn the drums. I think he’d like it, and we could start a band!"
"Oh shit, dude, that would be rad as fuck!"
Nick nodded. "Right?"
"If you ever need a place to practice, there’s no curfew or decibel limit at Casa de Close."
"Da--Jodie doesn’t actually mind if I get kinda loud. He joins in with his bass sometimes. I dunno how much louder we’ll be with drums and a lead guitar, though..."
Right. Glenn’s Nick played lead guitar, but Jodie’s Nick took after the bassist in him with rhythm guitar instead. At least it was still a guitar.
"You have someone in mind for lead?"
"Well, uh..." Nick broke eye contact, scratching at his hairline where his horns usually interrupted it. His cheeks were turning a little red, but not demon-red. "There’s... this girl at school."
Glenn grinned. "A girl? Nick!!" He tossed an arm over Nick’s shoulders, hand coming around to muss his hair again.
"Shhhh, don’t--"
"You’re growing up so fast!"
"Daaaaaad!" He made a whining noise from the back of his throat, and Glenn laughed. "She’s just a friend! Like, a really cool friend who plays lead guitar and sings..."
Releasing his son, he leaned back again, keeping an arm around the back of Nick’s chair. "Right, of course, of course. Just for the band."
"Yeah, for the band." He was still blushing, but he was smiling too. He turned back towards the water, fiddling his hair between his fingers. It was getting long, which a part of Glenn was very happy to see.
He found his mind wandering, as a comfortable silence settled over them. He wondered what Jodie’s version of before was. Should he ask about Morgan, or would that be weird? He definitely had questions he could ask. He stared out over the water, hand behind Nick fidgeting and digging his nails against each other. He was still debating when he saw the water splash funny out in the distance.
After a second of squinting and a few more splashes, he reached across Nick’s front to point. "Dude, is that a dolphin?"
---
The majority of the ferry ride was really, surprisingly nice. Nick and Glenn sat together, pointing out dolphins and jellyfish, talking about school and music and the newest show on TV. They didn’t talk about Jodie, or Morgan, or the Forgotten Realms, or Hell.
Everything was perfect, until the last fifteen minutes, when the teacher called everyone’s attention to pass out cabin assignments. The kids were in groups of six of the same gender, three bunk-beds to a cabin. They had been allowed to submit who they wanted to room with to the teacher, and she incorporated those requests into the assignments, so most of the kids had at least one friend in their room.
The adults’ cabins were smaller, three beds to a cabin. Glenn had almost pumped a fist in joy when he heard he was sharing a cabin with Marley Winters, but then the teacher added that their third was Jodie Foster. Then, to make it worse, when he asked Nick about Marley, what did he say?
That’s Danielle’s mom. The one who couldn’t make it.
So he had a cabin to himself, with Jodie Foster.
"Would you quit moping and move?"
Glenn suddenly realized he had been staring at the empty third bed for... a while. Jodie stood behind him, holding his duffel bag half-open. He’d taken his stupid polo shirt off so he just had on a stupid wifebeater undershirt, tucked into his stupid pants with his stupid belt. His phone was clipped to his belt. What a loser. God.
"Glenn. Can you please have your crisis once I’ve left to go to the showers? I’d like to get ready for bed."
Instead of answering, Glenn flopped onto the bed that was designated as his, groaning into the pillow. He could practically hear the eyeroll in Jodie’s voice when he muttered "yeah, me too, buddy," on his way out the door.

Every time Frank and Jodie walk past a mannequin, maybe even a bust, she’ll side eye him and murmur “Watch out might get you” or something similar.
No one else understands why she finds it so funny.
Frank does and often has a face similar to >:c

So.. Harrison Butker, who I had never heard of, seems like a real pig. The Kansas City Chief seems completely unaware that he does not live in1824. He attacked pride month, the transgender community and working women. His commencement speech at the Benedictine college has been poo poo’d by nearly everyone including the college itself and especially the Benedictine sisters. They released a statement: The Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts college don’t believe this represents what the founders envisioned. Instead of promoting unity, his comments seem to foster division. One of our concerns was the assertion that being a homemaker is the highest calling for a woman. We sisters have dedicated our lives to God and God’s people including many women whom we have taught and influenced over the past 160 years.** The NFL has also spoke up to let us know these are not their views.** The only people afraid of a strong, financially independent and successful female, is men like this. And the only reason they are afraid is because it diminishes their power and their control. -Celeste Yvonne

Trump only seems to pay attention in court when they are looking at clips of Trump .** Why do we have to hear about the gas and his general odor? ** I can see why the man looks up to President Jackson because this sounds familiar. “He assumed upon himself authority and power not conferred by the constitution and laws, but in derogation of both.” - Andrew Jackson’s Senate censure which was removed 3 years later. ** Does Fox news know how a trial works? They sure want special treatment for their boy. They kept up the mantra: “Is this America?” Yes, the process is working. Duh?!  ** Rod Blagojevich endorsed Trump. A bunch of the minions put on their red ties and showed up at the trial. J.D. Vance who once called out Trump is now one of the biggest VP wannabes. Is he a psychopath or did he also drink the flavor-aid? ** It seems that this is what it all comes down to. So many people think they can do any fucking thing they want with no consequences. Was he more influenced by Nietzsche or Cohn? ** As the defense began, witness Robert Costello was a smart ass to the judge and the courtroom was cleared. There is no respect for anyone. Trump vowed to testify but he did not. ** Eric was there every day and Don Jr. Showed up on the final day of testimony. On May 30, Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts. He will be sentenced in July. I know we’re all glad that he is starting to pay for his sins but we can’t drop the ball now. November is coming. **“I’m a very innocent man.” -Scary Clown 45/34. The trump trial is done and the Hunter Biden trial begins. ** Chad Daybell was also found guilty May 30, a great day for justice.
*****
Now that Trump has been found guilty, his cult members are angry. They do not seem to want to face reality. Why is violence always their answer? ** Justice has been served. Donald Trump is a racist, a homophobe, a grifter and a threat to this country. He can now add 1 more title to his list- a felon. - JB Pritzker ** People keep saying, “How can he run for President when he can’t even vote?” I do not understand this because from what I can tell, When a Florida resident is convicted, the state defers to the state the conviction came from. In NY, he CAN vote IF he is not incarcerated. But, I mean it’s time.. Lock him up. ** Social media went crazy with pics of Hillary outside the jail cell and gold Trump sneakers with ankle monitors. ** I wonder how many people in here have cars? - Trump
*****
Colbert called Trump’s campaign The complaining for Applause tour. ** DC Weekly is a publication out of Russia. It is said to be widely read by republicans. The paper loves to call the Truth Social crowd, “useful idiots.” When I hear Trump trying to make sense of what they, “believe,” It seems like wrestling with dementia. ** I nearly escaped death. - Trump ** I often think that the left gets so perplexed by some of the right is that this country should have progressed so much more by now. People should be much more educated now and with more knowledge there should be less racism and differences to fight over. There should be some common ideas we agree on but ignorance keeps that from happening. It is like the old slavers and successionists have just begat Trumpers.
*****
Truth Social lost $328 mil. ** So what is it? Is Biden a mastermind or is he a dottering old fool?  Trump claims both. ** Trump issued a cease and desist for the Trump movie that premiered at Cannes. Of course he did. The man lives for court! It will be great publicity. ** This is my country. This guy wants to destroy it. -Robert DeNiro

Richard Blumenthal informed us that Justice Alito had a ‘stop the steal’ sign at his house. He flew an upside- down flag outside his house in January along with other pro Trumpers to show support. Alito claims it was his wife (just like Menedez), retaliating against the Pro Biden neighbors. This is not the only flag that they flew. Other property flew the appeal to heaven flag. Dick Durbin has asked him to recuse himself from the Jan. 6 cases. He refuses! Pretty fucking unpatriotic Mr. Alito!! It figures that you would have no respect for our flag. ** Hey.. Thomas! Alito! Resign!!

It turns out that RFK Jr. has a lifeless worm in his brain. A past divorce claimed he couldn’t earn much for the ex because of memory loss etc. from worm and mercury poisoning. Kevin Spacey and Rob Schneider have endorsed him. So... Candidates in their 80’s or in their 70’s with worm? Cohen still lives in a Trump building. What?

Cannes brought controversy this year. Francis Ford Coppola with Megalopolis and Kevin Costner with Horizon have bet their own $ on their epics. Other films include The Apprentice, about a younger Trump that stars Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn. The film is having trouble finding a distributor. Bird and The Substance are getting lots of buzz! There is also Kinds of Kindness and All we Imagine as light. Meryl Streep and George Lucas received honorary awards. There are rumors that the French media would release a list of alleged abusive actors and directors. ** Black Dog won the Un Certain Regard, Anora won the Pale d’Or, the women of Emilia Perez won best actress and Jesse Plemons took best actor. Best screenplay went to the Substance.

The late- night hosts make fun of local news that all repeat the same lines. The latest was,” I can’t believe it’s May1st.” I grew up with the people who said this stuff all the time. This generic dialogue really works for those people. I have never really understood those who say the same things every year, are surprised when the first snow comes or wonder at how it gets dark so early. These things should no longer be a surprise to adults!

Travis & Mimi ~~~~ Chocolate with my Wife
Marie Hall, known as Mimi, was the answer to Travis’ prayers. She was a BYU graduate and loved the outdoors. A beautiful brunette, Mimi was educated and devout. Travis met her at church in January 2008 while Mimi was giving a talk for the Sunday mass. Lightning struck! Travis was mesmerized by this girl, and made sure to compliment her as soon as Mimi was done. Two weeks later, Travis asked Mimi on a date.
Unfortunately, Lisa Andrews, who was still dating Travis at the time, had no idea her boyfriend had set sights on somebody else. And Jodi had no idea Travis had met his future wife, at least not yet. Mimi was somebody who would change the future for all of them.
Travis and Mimi’s first date consisted of dinner, a trip to Barnes and Noble and a chat over hot chocolate.

February 26, 2008
05:09:02 TRAVIS to CHRIS HUGHES: I just spent the last 2 hours drinking hot chocolate with my wife. I got more of a vibe she is interested in me tonight. I am so freakin happy. We are going to a rock gym on Friday night!!!!!
But while Travis was practically foaming at the mouth, Mimi knew right away, there weren’t any sparks. Within a week, Mimi started seeing another guy from her single’s ward. But that was a short-lived deal only lasting a few weeks. As soon as Travis found out she was available again, he immediately got in touch and asked for another date. Thinking Travis was “nice” and not wanting to write him off too soon, Mimi agreed to go on another date with him. But again, there were no sparks, and Mimi describes their goodnight hug as “awkward.”
Travis, stuck in delusions and daydreams, had a slightly different take:
February 26, 2008
05:43:10 TRAVIS to SKY: Trust me she knows I’m interested. At the porch I told her I feel like a goof standing at the porch and she laughed and said yeah it can be awkward. Then we talked for a while and then it got quiet and then we both lookd at each other and started laughing. It was a pretty good moment. Then she stepped in and gave me a hug and said I’m making it hard on you J It put me in a euphoric bliss!!!

Uhh…? Meanwhile, back at T-Dogg’s ranch, while Travis and Mimi are in ‘euphoric bliss’ sharing hot chocolate and awkward hugs one moment, the next Jodi is recovering from semen in her eye.
17:38:55 JODI: Haha my left eye is still blood-shot. You have some potent stuff T-dogg ;)[[MORE]]
March 13, 2008
19:08:28 SKY to TRAVIS: You are not following “The Secret” why do people keep saying, “I didn’t know Travis and Jodi were back together.”
20:20:33 TRAVIS: I have not spent one minute with Jodi since I’ve been here.
20:23:28 HOLLIE ON SKY’S PHONE: This is hollie I just happen to be next to sky and I am so calling pinnochio on you
Even though Travis believes he’s on the road to the altar with Mimi, a woman ‘sent from heaven’, he’s still having anal sex with his stalker, Jodi. So what was his game plan? Was he going to marry Mimi and still sleep around? Even if he could cut the ties with Jodi and finally get rid of her, would that be the end of his deviant sex life? Or would there be some other skank waiting to fulfil his dirty needs? It didn’t matter if it was Jodi or somebody else, what was broken inside Travis remained broken and marrying Mimi wasn’t going to fix that. So again, what was his game plan?
There are five pivotal things that happen in April and May.
April 2 - Jodi moves back to Yreka.
April 21 - Travis decides to ask Mimi to go to Cancun.
May 1 – Mimi accepts the Cancun invitation.
May 10 – Jodi and Travis have phone sex and Jodi records it.
May 15 - Mimi gives Travis the “friends” talk.
Even though Mimi was giving Travis a bit of the cold shoulder, he was not giving up. He was contacting her either by phone, text or email, every single day. Maybe Travis’ attitude was if he could sucker folks by the dozen into PPL, he could eventually land the right gal. It didn’t matter if he wasn’t the right dude for her, what mattered was what he got out of the deal. And – LOL – a sucker is born every day, right?
Mimi testified “he was very interested in becoming good friends.”
But we all know that was not Travis’ intention. Maybe it was part of it, but he had much grander plans for his dream girl. As far as the Cancun trip is concerned, Travis and his dream woman also had fundamentally different ideas about that getaway.
Chris Hughes knew all about Travis’ intentions for Mimi and the two of them discussed the best way to ask her to go. Travis was afraid of scaring Mimi away. So, Chris thought it would be good to make the invitation as non-threatening as possible. He suggests:
April 28, 2008
03:08:54 CHRIS: Text her this… What up? I won an all inclusive trip for two to cancun. But as you know, I only need one [room]. So I gotta nother trip [room] up for grabs. Want it? If not, I’ll give to Chris and Sky, so they have a room for their nanny. Halla back!
03:16:21 TRAVIS: I thought I might say something like how would you like to lose your virginity in mexico.
03:25:35 CHRIS: Or that. Seriously though, sky and I think u ought to text her that. It is very non threatening and to the point and it doesn’t sound like you care either way which is good.
03:35:13 TRAVIS: Yeah I like that. I think I will hit her up Tuesday. I vented a lot to her. I think I have more confidence now.
Now, you can look at this conversation as two guys simply joking about getting lucky, which by itself, is no big deal. But you also need to understand it in the context of Travis and Mimi. Travis was on this downward spiral of collecting and using women. Mimi was not some other hook up for him; she was not a casual deal.
There’s nothing wrong with hopes or expectations that a trip will turn romantic. What was wrong was that Travis couldn’t be honest about his intentions and had to scheme to get her to go. He resorted to trickery, which was essentially the same manipulative shit that Jodi was pulling. Plotting and scheming to get his desired outcome.
Here’s what Mimi thought, via her court testimony in January 2013, would be the arrangement for their trip [1: 50: 39]:
########
“He let me know that we would be staying with a family, an LDS family, and I would be sharing a room with one of their daughters, a little girl.”
This family that Mimi’s referring to is the Hughes family. Based on her testimony, you get the impression that she either didn’t know the Hughes family or Travis wasn’t specific about who they were. The Hughes family, Chris and Sky, were attending the Cancun trip and they were bringing their young daughter, Zion, along with their babysitter as well.
Let’s take another look at that text exchange between Chris and Travis. The two men were trying to figure out how to get Mimi to go on a trip with Travis without scaring her away. Travis, of course, wanted Mimi in his room but he couldn’t exactly tell his Mormon prospect that that was the plan. Instead, he sold her on the idea she could share a room with the Hughes’ young daughter, or some similar arrangement, and based on that, Mimi decided she would go.
Mimi, to her credit, is more honest than Travis and makes sure he understands what her intentions are for the trip. Travis, no surprise, doesn’t take it very well.
May 15, 2008
20:43:14 TRAVIS to SKY: Mimi just gave me the I just want to be your friend talk. I want to kill myself. I have F-d up my life.
On the surface it may seem like Travis is being a total drama queen over this woman he barely knows. But, when you look at it closer, you can see the culmination of months, even years, of frustration bubbling inside of him. Travis saying he has fucked up his life is unfortunately true. In fact, it was pretty prophetic considering his life would be over in just a few weeks.
May 15, 2008
20:47:26 CHRIS: So is she using u for the trip still or did you kick her to the curb? You will be fine t. This was a road, for whatever reason you had to travel. U get that?
21:21:04 TRAVIS: Yeah. I’m still gonna take her. She still plans on going. I shot myself in the foot by saying when I asked her that she wasn’t obligated we were just going as friends. Oh well, she can be my chastity belt in Cancun.
21:23:03 CHRIS: J She may also fall for the tdogg in cancun. Bring your leopard thong.
One week later, May 28, Jodi steals her grandfather’s gun. Around this same time Mimi receives an anonymous phone call threatening her. This detail was not shared in court during Jodi’s original trial, it was recently found out when Travis’ former roommate, Enrique Cortez, did an interview during the penalty phase. Here’s what Enrique had to say:
From Websleuths [post #682]
“We ran into Mimi Hall, who was traveling with her parents. While the 3 of us spent a few minutes together at the grave, she had told us that before the murder, she got a harassing phone call. The only thing I remember Mimi saying about it was something along the lines of, “I know what you’re doing; you better stop it.” Lisa got a letter, Mimi got a phone call” Enrique Cortez said.
Can you see it? Jodi’s mind is made up, she’s not turning back. And Travis has no idea his fate has been sealed. It wasn’t a random act here or there that did, this was an accumulation of behaviour patterns building up over time, and quite a lot of time, many months, even years. Travis’ head is somewhere else, somewhere off in the clouds. He’s running around, towards something but at the same time away from something else. He’s also going nowhere. He’s chasing tail and he’s chasing his own tail, going around in circles. In May Travis feels he has one more chance, one last shot at Mimi. The stakes are high because in his book, Mimi is the best - and most beautiful thing - that has ever happened to him. She’s perfect. In fact she’s so great Travis is starting to get serious about himself for the first time. He senses Mimi’s hesitation about him, and what’s more, he’s starting to get a little real about it.
Mimi’s right. He needs to walk the walk. He wants to be a better man, not just for her, but because it’s who he wants to be. He wants to be better. He’s going to try.
Cancun, a world away from Mesa, represents a perfect world Travis is dreaming of. Where is a decent guy and he’s with a decent girl, and everything works out. But Cancun is also an exotic and faraway place, and there Travis will be in unfamiliar territory. Maybe there will be genuine moments, maybe there will be soul searching. Maybe Travis will actually reach a major turning point in his life. And in the background, there will be an impossibly blue ocean and sunsets and long walks on the sand. Everything in his life might be mended, healed, restored, made whole, if he can just make Mimi love him.
But Cancun is still a few weeks away and Travis isn’t going to wait for his dream girl. He has other fish to fry, and one of their names is Ms. Chaitanya Lay.

Oh man, to do all time would be impossible, it feels like, haha, I love looking at red carpets and have so many favourites! I'd probably need to be given a time window to curate some faves, sooo lets do the last few months given its been festival season?

Tumblr media
Tessa Thompson at Venice Film Festival! High fashion little red riding hood vibes, I love it.

Tilda Swinton, alien goddess also at Venice Film Festival. I would watch this movie, along with:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jodie Turner Smith at Venice Film Festival! I didn't love all her looks at the festival, but this one is perfection and she looks stunnnning.
Tumblr media
Also loved Rebecca Hall at Cannes Film Festival this year! Gorge! And Indonesian actress, Raline Shah, also at Cannes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Goooorgeous.

And finally Patricia Clarkson in Venice. I find metallic really hit or miss, particularly on the red carpet, but I just think she looks so stunning and these sort of metal-yet-oceanic tones are perfection.
I'm sure I'll have a lot more as the festival season continues, but these are defs some of my faves so far.

well it looks like at least becoming elizabeth (the new starz show about elizabeth i) will have accurate costume judging by the new set photos (french hoods and partlets alert) more wolf hall vibes then tsp so at least it will have that going for it
I’ll be so honest anon, if you loved Wolf Hall I support that and I do not begrudge you that, but I found that LARGELY boring as balls?  Mostly I just enjoyed psycho H8--Major Winters was a good casting.  Obviously there were some great performances, it had Claire Foy for God’s sake, but it just wasn’t my bag lol.  More my bag than The Spanish Princess, but I hope we get MORE interest than that.
I mean, I’m kind of over Tudor stuff in general, but I do think there are interesting things that can be done with Becoming Elizabeth if they’re sensitive about it.  Obviously, her teenage years were incredibly perilous.  I’ll be interested to see if they’ll be exploring her sexual trauma and the debate surrounding whether that, her trauma caused by her father’s murders of her mother and stepmother, or political theory motivated her decision to be unmarried.... or all three.  There’s a lot of interesting stuff to delve into there.  That and the Jodie Turner-Smith Anne Boleyn series sound really interesting.
